TCMS Among the 50 State Winners in National Samsung Competition
Tri County Middle School, part of the Tri County Area Schools District in Howard City, MI, has been named one of 50 State Winners in the 14th annual Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” competition. Each State Winner receives a $12,000 prize package and has the opportunity to move forward in the competition to compete for one of 10 National Finalist spots.
For the competition, students needed to identify a problem they could solve in the community or school they could solve using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Students in Dr. Christina Adamson’s 6th hour STEM class identified trash around the combined campus at Tri County Area Schools as an issue they could address. The student’s idea was to modify a trash can with multiple switches, a scale, and a ticket dispensing system.
Dr. Adamson also worked with students to create an action plan, or a plan of how to make their idea into something real. Highlights of the action plan include identifying the overall objective of the plan, identifying specific activities that students will participate in such as creating prototypes, as well as identifying benefits to the school and community as a whole, such as a reduction in trash being sent to the landfill and better recycling habits on the part of the school campus community.
Joe Williams, building principal at Tri County Middle School had this to say about the STEM program and Dr. Adamson “The accomplishments of our STEM students and their teacher/leader, Dr. Adamson, are extraordinary. What Dr. Adamson and the students at Tri County Middle School are creating, far outweighs any expectations I had about what a middle school STEM program could accomplish. I am so proud of our students and I cannot wait to see what they will do next.”
Teachers and students at each of the State Winner schools will now be asked to submit a three-minute video which brings the students’ idea to life by March 7, 2024.
• Each State Winner will receive a Samsung Video Kit to assist in the development of their “STEM solution pitch video”, as well as $12K in Samsung technology and the assistance of a Samsung employee mentor to craft their video submission.
• 10 National Finalist Schools will receive a prize package valued at $50,000 and be invited to participate in a live pitch event where they will present their project to a panel of judges.
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is a national competition aimed at students in grades 6-12, to leverage the power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in developing innovative solutions addressing critical issues in their local communities. Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is a national competition designed to empower students in grades 6-12 to leverage the power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to create innovative solutions addressing critical issues in their local communities. The competition empowers public middle and high school students to catalyze change by applying Problem-based Learning (PBL) principles, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurship to address some of society’s most pressing challenges.
Students in Dr. Christina Adamson’s 6th hour Computer class identified trash around the combined campus at Tri County Area Schools as an issue they could address. The student’s idea was to modify a trash can with multiple sensors. One would act as a switch to activate the next sensor and would be triggered when someone pushes the flap on the trash can. The next sensor would be attached to a scale, and if there is a change in weight detected in the trash bag, then a third sensor would dispense a sticker (or ticket) to the person as a small prize.
Teachers and students at each of the State Finalist schools will now be asked to submit an activity plan, detailing how their proposed STEM solution will address the identified community issue. State winners will be revealed in late January.
