Welcome to Tri County High School

Our goal at TCHS is to provide our students with the highest quality educational experiences possible.  We believe that by engaging in our scholastic and extra-curricular programs, students grow socially, emotionally, and physically while preparing to meet their secondary goals, whether it be college or career focused.  Our staff is committed to providing academic opportunities and other supportive services for our students, parents, and community.

Beyond academics, our students are offered an outstanding fine arts programs, varied club and extra-curricular activities, as well as numerous athletic opportunities.

Career Spotlight

Correctional Officer

At a glance: Correctional officers are responsible for the supervision, control and custody of criminal offenders who are either serving jail time or awaiting trial in a court of law. They usually work inside jails or penitentiaries, maintaining order and enforcing the rules. Correctional officers are employed by federal, state and local governments. Some work for private correctional facilities. Consider this career if you are emotionally mature, good with people, have great writing skills and have knowledge of other cultures & languages which would be quite useful. Drone Pilot

A drone Pilot operates unmanned aerial vehicles, uses include: Remote sensing of the atmosphere, disaster response, weather forecasting, scientific research; agricultural survey of crops, soils, and livestock; crop dusting, wildfire surveillance, wildlife surveys, power line and pipeline survey, industrial security; oil, gas,and mineral exploration; payload transport, search and rescue, and aerial photography for fields like real estate, construction, film and entertainment industry and accident investigation.  Level of Education: 4 Year College/University  Earnings Range: $100,000  Michigan Wage: $62,410 annually Michigan Outlook: 22% Growth Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: NMU has developed a partnership with the Kent Career Tech Center Many employers in today's UAS job market are requiring regular FAA pilot licenses for the UAS operators, anywhere along the spectrum from private through flight instructor ratings. While we expect that requirement to change as the industry matures, it is clear that a foundation of aviation knowledge is required to operate safely and effectively in the airspace system. Currently, Northern Michigan College in Traverse City (nor any other institution) cannot offer UAS operator certification, as the FAA has not yet published certification standards for UAS operators. NMC was part of the committee that drafted a set of rules for training and operator standards for the FAA and we expect our program to meet FAA requirements when they are published.

Basic research seeks to understand the biological and chemical processes by which crops and livestock grow. Applied research uses this knowledge to discover ways to improve the quality, quantity and safety of agricultural products. A food scientist may create new food products and develop new & better ways to process, package and deliver them. They also communicate research findings to the scientific community, food producers and the public.

Information Security Analyst

With the rise in hackers and data branches sweeping throughout companies and the government, there is a greater need to keep personal and top-secret information safe form cyberattacks. That’s where Information Security Analysts enter the picture. Information Security Analysts are responsible for protecting the computer networks of a company or government agency. Someone in an entry-level position may operate software to monitor and analyze information, while a more senior-level position could require investigate work to determine whether a security breach has occurred. Level of Education: 4 Year Bachelor’s Degree Median Annual Salary: $89,000—the best paid 10% earned $139,000 while the lowest-paid took home $51,000 Projected Employment Growth: 36.5% Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: FSU Consider this if you have strong problem-solving and analytical skills along with an understanding of computer systems.

Land Surveyor

At a glance: Before a plot of land is created or a building foundation is laid, Land Surveyors are called in to measure and map the boundaries of a site. They map the natural and constructed features on a plant of land. People also use land surveys to determine the value of plots of land they are buying or selling. Consider this if you have great math skills, are detail-oriented, able to judge object shape, size and distance and visualize abstract forms, have good communication skills and are physically fit.

Logistics Specialist

At a glance: Logistics Specialists, also known as Logistics Analysts, find the most cost-effective ways of moving materials, people, energy and information for large businesses. They study business functions such as manufacturing, storage, transportation and distribution. They devise the most cost-effective ways of using people, raw materials, energy money and information to get things done on time. Consider this if you have good problem-solving skills and a great communicator with excellent computer skills

Medical Dosimetrist

Radiation therapy is one way to treat certain types of cancer. It is the Medical Dosimetrist’s job to ensure that radiation treatment does the most good with the least harm to the patient. The Medical Dosimetrist first employs a three-dimensional computer model to calculate exactly where and how to distribute the radiation. The Medical Dosimetrist works closely with a Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist, Nurses and Radiation Therapists. Level of Education: Master’s Degree Median Annual Salary: $81,000—$112,000 Projected Employment Growth: Radiation therapy is advancing rapidly and proving effective for many types of cancer AND many current Medical Dosimetrists are nearing retirement age. Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: Grand Valley State University To become a Medical Dosimetrist, you must complete a four-year college degree, preferably in the physical sciences. This is a very rigorous and competitive program.

Medical Equipment Technician

Growth: 30% projected growth by 2022 Education:  2 year associates Schoolcraft College Muskegon Community College Salary:  Biomedical Equipment Technicians employed in hospitals in Michigan earned salaries ranging from an average minimum of $52,208 to an average maximum of $64,626. The state-wide average for these workers was $57,845 Medical equipment repair technicians work for hospitals, clinics, wholesale suppliers, and electronics repair shops. They perform repairs and maintain medical equipment such as electric wheelchairs, defibrillators, beds, and imaging equipment. Technicians use a variety of hand tools, electronic tools, and computers to keep the equipment in top working order.

Medical Insurance Billing & Coding

Medical billers and coders communicate between medical offices, patients and insurance companies. By assigning letters and numbers to diseases, injuries and medial procedures, they speed up the process of payment and ensure that records are correct. Coders/billers need to understand medical terminology, diagnosis and pharmacology. Level of Education: 2 Year Associates Degree Earnings Range: $24,000 - $29,000 Michigan Outlook: 14-20% Growth Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: Davenport, FSU, Lansing CC, Baker College and West Shore CC Students going into this field should have good organization and time management skills, be good with numbers and memorization and be able to maintain privacy and confidentiality associate with medical records.

Merchant Marine

There is an almost insatiable demand for new officers each year to fill positions aboard their vessels. Industry demand is based on vacancies resulting form officer retirements, shore side opportunities, fleet expansion and the increasing demand. Shore side opportunities such as transportation management, port management, ship surveying, import/export industries, federal government and ship brokerage positions are in high demand. Level of Education: 3-4 Year Bachelor’s Degree Earnings Range: $45,000—$75,000 Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: Northwestern Michigan College Additional Information: The maritime industry refers to all forms of waterborne transportation. The maritime industry is quite diverse including tug/barge trade, container ships, passenger ships, tankers, research vessels, ferry systems, bulk carriers and specialized vessels of many types. It represents international business connected with intermodal transportation and the global economy. The United States Merchant Marine refers to those individuals that make their living in the maritime industry. Merchant Marine officers have extensive training and managerial skills—essential in operating vessels that move goods within the United States and international waters.

Packaging Engineer

At a glance: Packaging engineering, also package engineering, packaging technology and packaging science, is a broad topic ranging from design conceptualization to product placement. All steps along the manufacturing process, and more, must be taken into account in the design of the package for any given product. Packaging is the 3rd largest industry in the US and 10% of every dollar spent at retail is directly attributed to packaging costs. Something to consider: As a technical program with a heavy science focus the School of Packaging has rigorous science and math requirements.

Respiratory Therapist

At a glance: Respiratory Therapists treat patients with chronic asthma, emphysema or other lung diseases and provide temporary relief and emergency are to victims of heart attacks, stroke, drowning or shock. Other responsibilities include monitoring respiratory equipment, assessing patients’ conditions and recommending changes in treatment. Respiratory Therapists record all relevant information in medical charts and brief doctors on patients’ progress. Consider this if you are patient, compassionate, physically fit and willing to continually upgrade skills.

Surgical Technologist

Working under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses and other surgical personnel, surgical technologist provide assistance and support before, during and after operations. Technologists put surgical instruments, equipment, sterile linens and solutions into place for procedures. They check equipment to make sure that it is working properly and then make any necessary adjustments. Technologists also prepare patients for surgery. During surgery, technologists pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants as they are needed. They often care for specimens that have been removed from the patent. In addition, they may maintain supplies of fluids such as plasma and blood. Then they are responsible for cleaning and restocking the operating room t o get ready for the next surgery. Level of Education: 2 Year College or Technical Training Earnings Range: $28,000—$57,000 Michigan Career Pathways: Health Sciences Michigan Wage: $42,000 annually Michigan Outlook: 10.5% Growth Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: Baker College –Muskegon, Kalamazoo Valley CC, Lansing SS, and Oakland CC Consider this if you work well with your hands, have a strong stomach, are emotionally mature and a quick learner.

Welding Technology Engineer

Welding Engineers apply the aspects of science, design inspection, mechanical and electronic systems, lasers, robots to join materials in fields such as automotive, shipbuilding, nuclear power, aerospace, mining and defense. They often travel to meet with other Engineers, companies, suppliers and clients so technical and communication skills are important. Welding Engineering Technology includes such tools as robots, lasers, Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and automation allowing high quality weldments to be designed and manufactured. Level of Education: 4 Year College or University Earnings Range: $61,000 Michigan Career Pathways: Health Sciences Michigan College/Universities that offer this degree: FSU Consider this if you are a good at critical thinking and problem solving with great communication skills.
