Message from the Director

The special education department serves eligible students who meet the following:

1. Have a disability as defined in the Michigan Special Education Rules and Regulations that;

2. Has an adverse impact on the student's educational progress and;

3. Requires specialized instruction through special education programs or services. (Specialized instruction includes methodologies, strategies, or timelines beyond those provided within general education that cannot be reasonably implemented by general education staff.)

It is the mission of the Tri County Area Schools Special Education Department to provide excellence and equity in education. Our goal is for all students with special needs to master essential skills and become successful, productive citizens. Tri County Area Schools is able to do this through a cooperation of programs which include general education, resource rooms, supplemental aides and services, Early Childhood Special Education programs, classrooms for students with cognitive impairment, and classrooms for students that are impacted to a more significant degree by their disability and require more intensive programming. Tri County Area Schools does utilize programs and services both inside of our school district as well as through the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District.

Current Special Education Student Numbers

  • 157 at the Elementary Level
  • 90 at the Middle School Level
  • 71 at the High School or Post-Secondary Level
  • 65 Tri County Students participating in programs operated by Montcalm Area Intermediate Schools District
  • 383 total students with active Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • 16.5% incidence of students receiving special education services within TCAS
