ARTICULATION DISORDERS

Problems in this area occur when a child is not able to produce sounds correctly. For example, he might say "wabbit" for "rabbit." This affects a child's ability to be understood by others.

LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Receptive language... problems may occur with a child's ability to comprehend questions, follow directions, understand word meanings and concepts.

Expressive language... problems with a child's ability to share wants/needs, formulate sentences with correct grammar, and explain word meanings.

Pragmatic Language...Problems when a child does not understand how to use language for social purposes (e.g., taking turns, clarifying information, asking questions.)

STUTTERING

This occurs when there is a disruption in the flow of speech. A child might repeat sounds or words (e.g., p-p-p please), prolong words, or get blocked on words. A child's awareness of his disfluency often creates more stress, and leads to an increase in the stuttering.

VOICE DISORDER

Some children develop habits which are harmful to the voice. These habits may include yelling, talking too loudly, or not getting adequate breath support for speaking. These habits may cause the voice to sound hash, breathy or hoarse, and can lead to medical conditions (e.g., vocal Nodules).
